Ten Little Celebrations – October 2025

October included some great volunteer and travel experiences…and plenty at home to celebrate too.

Road trip to Jefferson City – I celebrated the Missouri Department of Conservation Partners Roundtable (particularly Dr. Nadia Navarrete-Tindall talking about edible native plants), touring the Missouri capitol building, and Ha Ha Tonka State Park!

Corn on the cob from the grill - The temperatures were milder…we cooked on the grill more often and I always enjoy the corn on the cob cooked that way.

New faucets on bathroom and kitchen sink - My husband installed new faucets (with a little help from me holding things together while he tightened from underneath). The old ones had been leaking onto the counters when they were turned on. We are both enjoying the dry counters around the new faucets!

Season finale for the Butterfly House - I savored the final volunteer days and the celebration for the volunteers and staff.

Home school fair – I celebrated that so many people visited my table at the Home school Fair and seemed to enjoy learning about trees.

My car repaired – The damage to my car (mostly underneath) was repaired and I have already taken it on a road trip. I celebrated that it was fixed quickly and that it looks ‘good as new.’

Hiking poles – I cheered myself onward during my first test walk with hiking poles…have high hopes that they will help me avoid back pain on future hikes.

Memory care – I celebrated finding two memory care facilities that would be good candidates for my dad’s next home. My sisters and I had a difficult time choosing (and it was stressful)….not something I am celebrating.

New hot water heater and dishwasher – I celebrated that the new appliances were installed quickly…that the hot water heater is better for the environment (heat pump electric rather than natural gas) and the dishwasher is quieter than our old one.

A rainy day - The past few months have been very dry in our area so the rainy days in the later part of October were something to celebrate – although the rain came too late to have brilliant leaf colors this fall. The leaves are still mostly on the trees…muted colors.

Car Repair

I posted about my 2017 Prius Prime being damaged by a parking space berm on my way back from the Missouri Department of Conservation Partners Roundtable. It is now fixed and looking great again – nothing dragging, no shredded plastic tire well. My insurance provided a rental car for the 5 days it was in the shop.

It has been a very long time (maybe 20 years) since I had a car repair that required replacing part of the body and paint. It seems that this time was more efficient and a shorter time in the shop. Of course, the online claim to my insurance and text messages providing status were something new. We are paying more for insurance now, but the out-of-pocket expense was probably about the same.

As I was driving the rental car, I realized that don’t drive rental cars as often as it did pre-Covid (when I would sometimes fly to Dallas and rent a car to visit my parents) and certainly not as often as during the later part of my career when I was traveling frequently for work. The rental car felt awkward to me – about the same size as my Prius Prime but without the same power; I didn’t get used to it in the short time I had it!

In the end – I am relieved that my car is back in the garage and ready for my next road trip to Dallas.

Road Trip Back to Missouri

I’m becoming more familiar with the route between my parents’ home in Texas and my home in Missouri. This time I remembered that there was only one non-commercial highway rest stop along my route – the welcome center between Oklahoma and Texas. I was early enough that the main part of the building was not open yet but there were external doors directly to rest rooms that were unlocked (unlike the configuration of the welcome center from Missouri to Oklahoma). What a relief! There were no plants blooming in the heat of summer but the beds near the porch of the building were lush with foliage. The external walls of the building could be used for a geology lesson for that area of Oklahoma!

All the other stops were commercial – either toll road service centers or MacDonalds. I noticed that the MacDonalds’ décor incorporated a lot of familiar (Zentangle-like) patterns!

I was traveling on a Sunday so there were no active construction sites and traffic was light. No accidents slowed me down! I made it home in about 45 minutes less time than my nav system predicted when I first started. My Prius Prime got me all the way home on a full charge and 7/8 tank of gas!

Lesson learned: The Will Rogers Service Center along the toll road always seems crowded and not very clean…next time I’ll pass it by and stop at the Missouri Welcome Center that is not very much further!

Whirlwind trip to Maryland and Back

I left early after only one day in the Missouri house that was now ours…to go back to the Maryland house. It would be a 4-day trip with lots of driving each day. The weather was good for the whole trip although it had been very wet the days before. The early rest stops were soggy. I drove from Springfield MO to Huntington WV the first day…a bit long but I knew I would need time at my Maryland house to load the car on the second day. It rained heavily after I was at the hotel!

The Red Roof Inn in Huntington was a surprise. Perhaps it had been recently renovated because the lighting over the bed and the size/arrangement of the desk area were more functional than most hotel rooms.

I was up early the next morning and heading to my Maryland house. At one of the West Virginia stops, I noticed a dead tree…took a closer look at the fungus growing on the trunk.

The drive was uneventful…arriving early enough to have lunch with my husband on our Maryland house deck…and then start the daunting task of loading the cars. Our plan was to caravan back to Missouri with everything from the Maryland house….but we couldn’t quite fit everything so we’ll return to Maryland for the closing on that house; everything left will easily fit in one car. I took pictures of the house without furniture…with the new carpet…before we headed to a nearby hotel for the night.

We headed out early….saw morning sun on the Sidling Hill road cut.

After another night in a hotel, we got another early start…destination our house in Missouri. The drive took a dramatic turn at mid-morning: the front driver’s side tire blew out on my car just east of the Skeeter Mountain rest stop in Indiana. I was glad my husband was following me. It occurred on a bridge….part of the tire flying off…I managed to control the car well enough to pull onto the shoulder past the bridge. I sat in the car after I got it stopped. My husband came up and asked if I was OK…’not really’ was my response. Fortunately, the trauma was emotional rather than physical. We both stood further off on the shoulder, and he called for a tow (my car does not have a spare). I took pictures of the car…and the vegetation nearby. The tow truck came in about 20 minutes…about 10 AM; the tow to a tire place took about 30 minutes and a new tire was on the car by about noon. We continued toward our Missouri home.

Fortunately, the rest of the drive was uneventful…the blow out episode causing a 3-hour delay…not bad overall. Both of us went to bed early - emotionally exhausted once the drive was over.

Home Valuation Needs to Consider the Risk of Climate Change - News | Planetizen – The piece is focused on sea-level rise but there are other climate change factors that might also need to be considered: increasing drought (i.e. some places that won’t have enough water to support the population living there) and – perhaps related – extreme heat/fire risk. Our government should not be willing to buy increasingly risky mortgages through Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

Cassowary Quest: A Tale of Danger and Defecation – Learn a bit about the cassowary – great picture and video too.

American Academy of Sleep Medicine calls for elimination of daylight-saving time -- ScienceDaily – I hope the drive to not switch times begins to gain momentum. It’s annoying – and not healthy for us either.

Dragonflies the Star of Photography Book About Their Lifecycle – We didn’t get to Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens this year to photograph dragonflies (along with the lotuses). These pictures are awesome….and encourage me to think about spending more time near ponds next summer.

The rare plants that ‘bleed’ nickel - BBC Future – Phyto-mining may be an alternative to using heavy machinery, destroying an ecosystem, and producing toxic waste. Hopefully, the work being done now will quickly become the dominate way to mine nickel.

A Field Guide to Finding Cool Moths – Mothing is (not yet) as popular as birding. The techniques discussed in this article are a good start. I’m going to try leaving the porchlight on tonight – checking around it before I go to bed and then again when I first get up (when it’s still dark outside). Understanding how birds respond to extreme weather can inform conservation efforts -- ScienceDaily – An example of how scientists use the data submitted by a large number of people into eBird to answer questions re the impact of climate change and the resilience of birds (or lack of resilience).  

Unique Activities for Yesterday:

Prius Prime maintenance. The miles put on the car since the last service were minimal, but it was time for the maintenance. Everyone at the dealership was wearing masks but there didn’t seem to be any hand sanitizer stations (I was glad I had brought my own). I brought disinfectant wipes for the inside car surfaces when I picked up the car and then drove away with the windows open to clear out the air in the car….continued to wear my mask for most of the drive home.  

I’ve about used up the tank of gas I bought 9 months ago so I’ll fill it up and start plugging it in again to do all my errands with it as an EV. I hope there is a vaccine available by the end of the year --- and I’ll be out and about a lot more.

Mini-clover update. We’ve had gentle rain for the past few days and temperatures in the low 70s into the 80s. The clover is a cloud of tiny of green leaves on the surface of the bare spots in our yard. This is evidently good clover growing weather!

Monarch Caterpillar update. I only found one caterpillar this morning and it hasn’t moved much since I saw it yesterday. It’s large…hope it is about ready to make a chrysalis.

Scenic Drive 1

I haven’t been driving much since February and everywhere I go is relatively close to home. I plugged my Prius Prime in after every trip and drove exclusively as an EV in the early months of the year. Then I stopped driving completely for almost 3 months. Here we are in July and I haven’t bought gas since January. I am realizing that I need to use up the gas before it goes bad. My solution is to take some scenic drives over the next few weeks. I found a map of scenic roads in the county where I live (here) to help me pick routes. My plan is to pick routes that will take an hour or so.

For my first drive – I picked addresses that were already in the navigation system of my car. I’d done several field trips to the Middle Patuxent Environmental Area.

That got me to the scenic Trotter Road. I stopped to get a picture of the entrance to the South Wind Trail. The milkweed was in full bloom. Its sweet smell wafted through the air. There was a tiger swallowtail on one of the plants. There were several cars parked near the trailhead and, in the nearby neighborhood, there were people out for morning walks and one person roller blading!

I set the next destination for Howard County Conservancy and picked the alternative route my navigation system presented that would take me via two other scenic roads: Sheppard Lane and Folly Quarter Road. I’d not driven that route before, and it was indeed scenic - a 2-lane road that followed the contours of the land. Chicory and Queen Anne’s Lace were blooming along the roadsides except where a huge house had been built and the wild plants had been replaced with mowed turf (not something I prefer any more). I also noticed a field of corn that had a stand of wild plants at a corner of the field that included milkweed! Hurray for a farmer than didn’t use herbicide!

When I turned into Howard County Conservancy, there was a family walking out along the road and more cars than I expected. I took a picture of the entrance sign as I drove out…thinking that I would start my scenic drive at HCC some future morning (and wear hiking clothes so I would have a longer stop).

Overall, it was a good first drive. The car gets excellent mileage to I didn’t use very much gasoline; there are a lot of scenic drives left on this tank of gas. They’re a low risk mood brightener as much as spending time outdoors on my deck/in my yard….part of the new normal in this COVID-19 pandemic time.

Unique Activities for Yesterday:

Corn-on-the cob. Last summer we grilled corn-on-the-cob with the shucks on our gas grill. That is not an option this year since we’ve used up the gas and haven’t figured out a low risk way to buy more. So – I decided to try it in the oven.  I cut the ends of the silk and the wayward leaves off with kitchen scissors and put them in the 350-degree oven (no pan…just on the oven rack) for 30 minutes. I turned them at 15 minutes but that was probably not necessary. They were excellent! I cut the ends off and took the shucks/silks from the cobs. Both come off more easily after cooking! The corn was excellent eating. It didn’t have the char marks that it gets on the grill, but the flavor was the same. Now we have no pressure to buy more gas for the grill.

Zucchini bread. I made the zucchini bread with yellow squash - used chunky apple sauce for half the oil in the recipe - used up the brown sugar I had on hand rather than white sugar. Usually I make muffins, but my refrigerator is so full right now that I opted to use glass baking dishes that have lids that allow easy stacking. It won’t last long with my husband and I both enjoying it for our breakfasts.

Ten Little Celebrations – July 2019

July 2019 was a busy month with two weeks of the months a way from home and volunteering. We’re in the thick of summer!

4th of July. There is the holiday celebrated with fireworks and food and family early in the month. I was in Texas rather than at home.

Yellow-Crowned Night Heron. It’s thrilling to see a heron that I don’t see all that often…a serendipity sighting during a hike to celebrate.

Easy drive through Arkansas. I celebrated that the road through Arkansas on my way back to Maryland from Texas was a lot better than I expected – good road, no construction, no accidents.

Marigolds. I savored the flowers available for cutting when I go to pick up my CSA share every week. Marigolds are among my favorites….but the sunflowers and amaranth and zinnas are good too.

Pittsburgh to Springfield MO in a day. It was a long drive with my husband and I caravanning. We both celebrated when we arrived – tired but otherwise unscathed.

At home again. After being away for 2 weeks (not concurrently) I had several days celebrating just being at home again.

Prius Prime. I celebrated my car that has excellent range and is easy to drive. It still feels a little new and it’s 2.5 years old! These recent road trips have added quite a few miles.

Surviving a very hot Wings of Fancy shift. I celebrated that having something cold at each break (grapes, popsicle, Gatorade) and drinking lots of water enabled me to be fine at the end of the shift….and even relaxed in my air conditioned car on the way home.

Summer campers making butterfly Zentangles. Celebrating sharing an activity with campers….enjoying their creations as much as they did.

Toad under the oak tree. There is a toad that is making its home in the day lily forest under the oak tree. I celebrated that our yard is providing suitable habitat (there was a very small black rat snake there too…which I am choosing to celebrate too…but I didn’t take time to get a picture).

Prius Prime – Year 1

I’ve own my Prius Prime for a year as of today….and enjoyed the serenity of driving in EV mode for most of my errands. I took this picture just after I bought the 3rd tank of gas (it came with a full tank so it’s on is 4th tank at this point).

It has been an easy thing to transition from a gasoline powered car (my 10-year-old Acura TL) to a plug-in hybrid. I view it as a stepping stone toward and purely electric vehicle by the time I buy another new car…and maybe that will be self-driving as well. The plug-in hybrid has worked well for me since I do make road trips occasionally that would have taken more planning – changes to the way I travel – than I was ready to undertake. This car makes it easy since it just uses some gasoline when I am on the road for a longer time.

I like that the car charges overnight (I have it programed to start charging at 11:15 PM); I haven’t needed to upgrade the regular outlet in the garage since I don’t need faster charging. There have been a few times that I’ve come back from an errand knowing I had another later in the day that I’ve had it ‘charge now’ rather than waiting for the overnight….but it hasn’t been a frequent occurrence.

The only bad experience I had with the car was a tire blowing out (on my first road trip!) last summer. The passage of time has dimmed that trauma….and the car has been a wonderful drive for the rest of the time.

I’m still pleased with my decision from a year ago today!
