This week’s eBook is a children’s book published in 1872 about insects: Comic Insects. The illustrations were done by Berry F. Berry, the text by F.A.S. Reid, engraved by Dalziel Brothers and published by Frederick Warne & Co (who later published Beatrix Potter’s books). The book is a pleasant example of the history of publishing…of children’s books…of illustration!

There are 14 volumes of Mitteilungen der Deutschen dendrologischen gesellschaft (Communications of the German Dendrological Society) published from 1893 to 1925 followed by 6 books that continue the Carnivorous Plant Newsletters; there are 4 volumes per year, so this month includes 2021 to 2022; I’ll continue browsing this periodical in September.

This week I am featuring a journal (Tulane Studies in Geology and Paleontology) from the Department of Geology at Tulane University published between 1962 and 1997. There are some volumes available via Internet Archive (links and a sample image from each one below). The book of the week is a magazine – Metalsmith from SNAG (Society of North American Goldsmiths)! Continuing my look at Life Magazines on Internet Archive….
As I looked at the issues from 1949, the advertisements often stood out (for fossil fuels, Pillsbury, Lionel trains, train travel, World Book Encyclopedia) …and also items that were the beginnings that of things that have developed since then: farmers using lady bugs to control insects on crops, the launch of Viking II, Prince Charles (now King) as a baby, shale oil, a pipeline in Saudi Arabia, big oil in west Texas). Some articles referenced back to World War II: art depicting the Germans trying to burn out London and war babies starting first grade. Evident the cold in the first months of 1949 were very damaging in the Midwest and there was heavy snow in the Cascades in May!
The Life pictures are windows into what the publishers (and a lot of other people) thought was newsworthy in 1949.

I was browsing through the December 1909 issue of McClure’s Magazine when I found A Child’s World – A Series of Pictures by Jessie Wilcox Smith. I always enjoy her illustrations and it was a pleasant surprise. There are only 5 illustrations – one shown in this post to entice you to follow the link to the others for the quick ‘book of the week.

The author was an entomologist and engraver…and secretary to the Aurelian Society. The book was printed by the author!

The Corcoran Gallery of Art hosted an exhibit of photography from the local camera club in April 1901…and the exhibition book is my pick for Book of the Week. The book is available on Internet Archive.
The year caught my attention since one of my grandfathers was born in 1901; he would have been 3 months old when this exhibition happened!
My favorite of the sample images is the icy fountain…with the US Capitol in the background.

In 2016, “Pergamon and the Hellenistic Kingdoms of the Ancient World” was an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The art book from the exhibition is available on Internet Archive. Browsing the pictures is a good way to get the gist of exhibition!
The book of the week is an exhibit catalog available on Internet Archive. It was published in 1930, and the Foreword says that all the artists except for one were alive at the time of the exhibit. The works were lent for six months and were shown in 5-6 cities – organized by the American Federation of Arts. This is Canadian art from before World War II and reflects the development of Canadian expression that began in 1910…in many cases going back to nature for inspiration.
This week’s eBook was published in 1921: Wonderwings and other Fairy Stories. The author was Edith Howes of New Zealand. The illustrations were created by Alicea Polson. It is available on Project Gutenberg. There are other books by Howes on Internet Archive; as I was looking at the Wikipedia entry for the author I decided to browse The Cradle Ship which was published in 1916 and became a minor landmark in sex education for children!

Internet Archive has digitized versions of many Life Magazines. I have been browsing through them – slowly since there was an issue for each week. As I looked at the issues from 1947, I noticed the aftereffects of World War II – helping veterans, technology transitioning to civilian use (DDT, lipstick, atomic energy), hunger/wreckage/suffering in Europe and Japan, Farmers and factory worker were better off than they were before the war.

The ‘book of the week’ is a catalog from a 1937-1938 art exhibit of Swedish art. It is available on Internet Archive.
The preface of the volume provides some context: The exhibit was “of Swedish decorative art for the United States of America in connection with the 300 years’ celebration of the first settlement of Delaware.” It “spans an extensive period of at least 8,000 years, from the Bone Age through the course of the ages to our present century.” “What we would wish to show is firstly and lastly the artistic evidence of a very long national history, to serve as a salutation on the occasion of the 300 years’ jubilee of our forefathers’ settlement in Delaware. We hope that the great American public will apprehend this exhibition as it is intended, namely, in the light of an invitation to step over the bridge of art into a closer contact with the Swedish nation, its history and spiritual atmosphere.”
Family of Man: the Greatest Photographic Exhibition of All Time - 503 Pictures from 68 Countries - Created by Edward Steichen for the Museum of Modern Art was published in 1955. The prologue is by Carl Sandburg. In the introduction Eward Steichen says they worked on the exhibit for almost 3 years and reviewed over 2 million photographs. The collection is interesting to look at now for the original reason the exhibit was created and from a historical perspective. What would be different if such an exhibit were produced today? The most obvious is that the photographs would be in color…but so much has changed in the world in the past 70 year. For example, I wonder if we have become less ‘ethnic’ less ‘religious’ – are we more likely to be obese – are some human faces so modified by treatment that they look artificial). The book is available on Internet Archive.
