Louis Fraser was a British zoologist and collector active in the mid-1800s. He travel widely and spent his last years in America. His Zoologica Typica, or figures of the new and rare animals and birds in the collection of the Zoological Society of London, this week’s book of the week, was published in 1849. It is lavishly illustrated and now easily browsed on Internet Archive.

Twenty more books were added to my botanical print eBook collection in May - available for browsing on Internet Archive. The Descriptions of orchid genera by Fritz Kraenzlin series that I started back in May was completed with another 6 volumes in this month’s eBotanical Prints list. There are volumes 1 and 3 of Rudolf Koch’s Das Blumenbuch; I discovered had browsed the second volume back in 2018 and it was already on the list! The oldest volume on the list is Florilegium novum hoc est by Johann Theodor Bry published in 1611; its sample image is the only one that is not in color!

Internet Archive has digitized versions of many Life Magazines. I have been browsing through them – slowly since there was an issue for each week. As I looked at the issues from 1938, I thought about my parents in elementary school then. They were probably still mostly oblivious to the events in the broader world – secure with their families in rural/small town Oklahoma. The sample images (one from each weekly magazine) show a variety of topics the Life editors chose to cover over the course of the year. The growing news of war in Europe was in the news but life in America was not impacted very much.

My ‘book of the week’ is one published in the waning days of the Soviet Union in 1989: A Picture Book of Insects by Vitaly Tanasyichuk with drawings by Ruben Varshamov. Like many Raduga Publishers books that came out in the 1980s, it is not now available on Internet Archive.
The illustrations (4 samples below) are the motivation to browse the book!
Twenty more books were added to my botanical print eBook collection in April - available for browsing on Internet Archive. The series of Recueil des plantes les plus usuelles peintes d'apres nature by Pierre de Savary that I started browsing back in March was completed in April. Another series, Getreue Darstellung und Beschreibung der in der Arzneykunde gebräuchlichen Gewächse, included 5 volumes (medicinal plants). A third series was started at the end of the month Descriptions of orchid genera by Fritz Kraenzlin; there are another 6 volumes that will be in the May eBotanical Prints list. There were only 3 books that were not in a series!

I browsed 36 children’s books in February – published in the Soviet Union during the 1980s. Some were clearly for export – in Hindi or English or Tamil or Bengali or Kannada. The text was not the draw for me; I was browsing for the illustrations. I’ve always enjoyed the artwork in books intended for children. It entices young readers…often colorful, sometimes whimsical. Internet Archive has quite a collection of books for children published in the Soviet Union for export during the 1980s. I was very familiar with books for children published in the US during the same time because I was reading a lot of them with my young daughter in the early 1990s. The illustrations are the big draw – as the sample images from the books I browsed last January show. They are often colorful…sometimes artsy or whimsical…sometimes realistic. Enjoy browsing some children’s books!
The week’s eBook pick is the six volumes of Francois Le Valllant’s Histoire naturelle des oiseaux d'Afrique published between 1796 and 1808 and available from Internet Archive. The illustrations of birds were created from his collection of skins preserved with arsenic soap that were stuffed and mounted in near lifelike positions. He was one of the first to use color plates in his books about birds and was a keen observer of bird behavior. Enjoy the sample images….and browsing the whole volumes!

The eBook for this week features the art of ukiyo-e artists from the late 1700s through the first half of the 1800s. The artists are Chōbunsai Eishi, Eishōsai Chōki, and Katsushika Hokusai (links are to the Wikipedia entry for each artist). The book is the catalog from an exhibition of their prints in Paris in 1913. I have included 6 sample images from the book…but there are 118 plates in all – so well worth taking a look at the art work in the online books itself.
Twenty more books were added to my botanical print eBook collection in December - available for browsing on Internet Archive. They cover a range of botanical topics: medicinal plants (9 volumes), ferns (2 volumes), plants of China (2 volumes), and fungi of Scotland (7 volumes). Overall - the 20 books were published over less than 100 years (1760-1852).

Lieutenant Lionel Bickersteth Rundall’s The Ibex of Sha-ping was published in 1915, the year after he died at the beginning of World War I in the trenches at Festubert, France because of a blundered order. He was 24 years old. The joy he must have felt in the Himalayas during his years in India shows in his artwork included in the book….a glowing reminder of a life that ended too soon. The book is freely available on Internet Archive and is well worth browsing.
James Bolton was a naturalist in the 1700s that published books about plants, fungi, and birds. He was a talented illustrator. The week’s eBook is his book about birds. He was a keen observer of the birds themselves and their nests. The book is available on Internet Archive.

The week’s featured eBooks are six historical books for children - written in the early 1900s (1903-1924) by Francis Margaret (Madge) Fox. It’s interesting to think about how childhood has changed in the past 100+ years…and the books available to them. My grandparents were children during this time and their families were settlers/farmers of the prairie; they likely did not have any children’s books in their households and lived in very rural communities. There were not as many libraries in the US in the early 1900s as there are now and books were beyond the means of many families. Now we have whole sections of libraries dedicated to books for children! When I volunteer at the used book sales at the library, the ones for children are our most reliable sellers.
Madge Fox’s papers are held by the University of Michigan Library. Their site has a short biography of her life.

They cover a range of botanical topics: medicinal plants, botanical link in literature (Milton), particular taxonomic groups, and fruit as well as plants of places (Italy, Russia, and Korea (7 volumes!)). Three volumes (1 by Cornut and 2 by Presl) were about North American plants from preserved plants collected by others – the authors never visit the New World. Overall - the 20 books were published over almost 300 years (1635-1933).

This week’s books are 9 well-illustrated travel books by Nevin Otto Winter published between 1910 and 1918. I was most interested in the illustrations – mostly photographs – although the narrative would serve to understand the perspective of an American traveler of that time period encountering foreign customs. I picked two sample images from each book to include with this post but follow the link to Internet Archive to experience the whole book. Enjoy!
I am thinking of Thanksgiving ahead of time – planning a quite holiday with family with activities planned before and after:
The holiday light display is open for Friends of the Garden the Monday before Thanksgiving…so we will enjoy our first walk through of the season unless the weather is wet. I missed seeing them at all in 2023 because I was in Dallas for the later part of the year.
I am not a black Friday shopper…but enjoy being outdoors (maybe working off some of the calories from the day before). Our November has been relatively mild…good hiking weather.
There is also plenty in my life to be thankful for right now:
My dad is comfortable at his assisted living home; my sisters and I are able to visit him frequently.
I have finished my Missouri Master Naturalist training, and the volunteering opportunities seem to be coming along as I expected. There is much to learn and do even during the winter.
The Identifying Woody Plants class at Missouri State is about over…and I thoroughly enjoyed the field trips – learned a lot about great outdoor places close to where I live.
Our home is snug – ready for winter…the sprinkler system winterized and the heating system checked.
Both cars are performing well. Both have been used for road trips recently. My husband and I both appreciate the driver’s aids on modern cars when we make longer drives.
The fall has been prolonged by the milder temperatures. The color might have been muted from less rain in the summer, but the length of the display made up for that.
Internet Archive is back online. I missed it a lot while it was down and realize how much I savor browsing through its digitized old books; many of them are not available otherwise.
Life is good….
