Internet Archive has digitized versions of many Life Magazines. I have been browsing through them – slowly since there was an issue for each week. As I looked at the issues from 1943, the ads that almost always have a linkage to the war stand out. Every issue had one or more articles about the war too. The magazine depicted a country pulling hard to support the military and the war effort.
Twenty more books were added to my botanical print eBook collection in October – all are available for browsing on Internet Archive. The publication dates span from 1750 (Plantae selectae quarum imagines ad exemplaria naturalia Londini – the second on the list) to 2007 (Benjamin Smith Barton: naturalist and physician in Jeffersonian America…the seventh on the list). There are two series:
Revue bretonne de botanique pure et appliquée from the early 1900s. The volumes were edited by Lucien Daniel, a professor of applied botany at the University of Rennes.
Bothalia, a publication of the National Herbarium at the University of South Africa in Pretoria from the 1920s and 1930s.

Internet Archive has digitized versions of many Life Magazines. I have been browsing through them – slowly since there was an issue for each week. As I looked at the issues from 1942, I saw the impact of Pearl Harbor on the nation and the magazine. There every week there were articles about the war and even the ads contained references to the war. It was a voice that both reported on and promoted the active support of the war effort by everyone.

Charles H. Bennett was a British illustrator; 5 of his books that are available from Internet Archive are this week’s pick for eBooks. They were published between 1857 and 1872; the last one was published after his death in 1867.
He died early leaving his wife with 8 children and another on the way; his colleagues thought so highly of him that they raised funds to help the widow – enough that more than a decade after his death she claim to have ‘means derived from dividends.’
Andrew Garrett was an American explorer, naturalist, and illustrator. He was born in Vermont in 1823 but spent most of his life (from 1857 to 1887) on pacific islands including Hawaii from 1857-1863). He was completely self-taught…became a skilled artist and adventurer/scientist of shells and fishes. The 7 volumes that are my ‘book of the week’ are his watercolors of fishes; they are available from Internet Archive. This work became the baseline of south sea fishes for the next generation of ichthyologists.

Internet Archive has digitized versions of many Life Magazines. I have been browsing through them – slowly since there was an issue for each week. As I looked at the issues from 1941, I thought about the buildup of war activities in the US and then Pearl Harbor occurring in December. The US did not formally enter the war until December 11th but it is obvious from the pictures Life published that people were very aware of what was happening and the US involvement too. And there were still other aspects of life that continued on – iceboats, Coca-Cola, glass food packaging, the New York skyline. The opening message of this book concluded by saying ‘We must not let homelessness become an American institution.’ And yet – in 2025, there are still a lot of people that are homeless and the cost of housing is rising fast enough that it is unlikely that there will ever be enough affordable housing….or effective enough attention to reduce the tragedies that unfold for people that find themselves in the situation.
The book is a pictorial work – full of photographs from cities all over America. Some of the people had died before the book was published. It is available on Internet Archive. I found myself thinking about what has changed. There are new drugs that are, at least, as addictive as the ones in 1988 and some are more likely to cause death from overdose or wounds that will never heal. The tents are similar. The cars that people try to live in are different models…probably just as uncomfortable. But in the end – the efforts that non-profits and churches and cities made really have not been very effective.
This week’s ‘book of the week’ is 22 issues of a journal from the Illinois Ornithological Society from 2012-2022(available on Internet Archive). I enjoyed the photography and drawings of birds that are seen in the Midwest…close enough to where I live that I see at least some of them in areas of Missouri. As I write this post, I am planning a trip to Illinois in a week or so….hoping I will see some of these birds while I am there!
Twenty more books were added to my botanical print eBook collection in August - available for browsing on Internet Archive. The publication dates span almost 400 years! The oldest is from 1642 An album of botanical studies and represented by the sample image at row 3, column 2 in the mosaic. The most recent is from 2023 The Beauty of The Flower: The Art and Science of Botanical Illustration which Is a good reference for the history of botanical prints. The sample image is on the last row of the mosaic, column 3. My favorites this month are the 4 books by S. Fred Prince because they are about Missouri plants! The sample images are the 4th row in the sample image mosaic.

The ‘book of the week’ is from an early 1990s exhibition of Tony Cragg’s work. The artist has continued to work and evolve…so this the book represents his early work! Their families were probably listening to the radio but many of the reports must have seemed very far away, and it is unlikely that saw the pictures in Life Magazine. I always enjoy seeing Chihuly glass in museums and gardens…and enjoyed browsing this book available from Internet Archive with wonderful pictures of some of his work. It is my book of the week.
Glass is a material that is strong yet fragile, shaped when molten then rigid. It’s my favorite kind of 3-D art. The graceful curves and vibrant colors seen in this book are like a meditation prompt for me!
This week’s book is the Birds of America edited by Thomas Gilbert Pearson and published in 1917. Pearson was one of the co-founders of what became the National Audubon Society and was an American conservationist in the early decades of the 1900s…a time when egrets were killed for their plumes to be used in lady’s hats. The book includes 106 plates by Louis Agassiz Fuertes. It is available for browsing on Internet Archive.

Internet Archive has digitized versions of many Life Magazines. I have been browsing through them – slowly since there was an issue for each week. As I looked at the issues from 1939, I thought about my parents in elementary school then. War was becoming more serious over the course of the year but Pearl Harbor was not until December 1941; the US was providing supplies but was not actually engaged in the war effort.

My pick for the week’s eBook is from the British Museum and was published in 2011. It is available on Internet Archive. Many of the artifacts are jewelry. They showcase the design and metallurgy skills of the period. Many times we focus on the violence of the Viking Age…their ships and weapons and raiding of coastal settlements. Looking at jewelry provides a different perspective. I wondered how many of the designs were from the Vikings themselves or were looted (or copied) from the peoples they encountered.
Twenty more books were added to my botanical print eBook collection in June - available for browsing on Internet Archive. Most books were published in the 1800s (14 of the 20) although there were 5 from the 1700s. The first book on the list - The Illustrated Garden: Books from the Missouri Botanical Garden, 1485–1855: An Exhibition at the Saint Louis Art Museum – was published in 2004 and is going to be a great reference and I continue to explore eBotantical Prints!

The book-of-the-week is a children’s book about the Botanical Garden in the middle of Moscow published in 1983. The story is about a visit to the garden by a six year old boy and his father. It is illustrated with colorful art and photographs. I’ve picked 4 sample images but there are many others to browse via Internet Archive. The author (and photographer) is Victor Datskevich and translated from Russian by Jan Butler.
This is one of the many books published in the waning days of the Soviet Union and part of the MIR-titles collection in Internet Archive.
