Continuing my look at Life Magazines on Internet Archive….

As I looked at the issues from 1951, advertisements reflected products like Coca-Cola, Mounds candy bars, Bell telephone, airline flights, Life Savers candy, Alice in Wonderland movie, cat food, Avon cosmetics, penicillin by Merck, and Chrismas ads for eggnog and 7Up. There were pictures of construction, the beginning of an avalanche, Yellowstone in winter, the Dalai Lama traveling before he left Tibet to live in India, Korean war, Peary in the Arctic, and A-Bomb tests. They were all part of what the publisher thought was newsworthy in 1951!

Conservation Planning eBook

My book of the week is a 2018 publication from the Missouri Department of Conservation. Its premise is that there are stewardship practices suitable for every land use and ever population density. We all can work to implement conservation planning tools in ways that will benefit the place we call home and the people we call neighbors. We cannot continue to think and act in ways that assume that urban/suburban areas are incompatible with natural resource conservation!

Cat Photographs from 1929

Sarah J. Eddy’s Alexander and some other cats was published in 1929 with black and white photographs. Many of the pictures are dated by the clothes of people with the cats….or backgrounds. The three sample images I chose could have been taken today. Cats are photogenic! The book is available in Internet Archive and is my eBook of the week.

The author – according to her Wikipedia entry – was a artist, photographer and activist. “In 1894, Eddy wrote and illustrated a short article "A Good Use for the Camera" for The American Annual of Photography. In the article, Eddy concludes that the personal interactions she had with her photographic subjects were as rewarding as the finished images.”

Continuing my look at Life Magazines on Internet Archive….

As I looked at the issues from 1950, the Korean War was becoming more dramatic as the year progressed. The 75% reduction in pneumonia deaths between 1930 and 1950 was a stunning statistic. Advertisements from Life Savers, Howard Johnsons, American Airlines, General Motors, Christmas cards, Coca Cola and American toys captured my attention. Natural events – frozen redwing blackbirds, lots of snow in the Sierras, dust bowl in Texas, albino deer, Mauna Loa erupting, an owl nest, and Dutch Elm Disease - also were in the news. They were all part of what the publishers thought was newsworthy in 1950!

Comic Insects

This week’s eBook is a children’s book published in 1872 about insects: Comic Insects. The illustrations were done by Berry F. Berry, the text by F.A.S. Reid, engraved by Dalziel Brothers and published by Frederick Warne & Co (who later published Beatrix Potter’s books). The book is a pleasant example of the history of publishing…of children’s books…of illustration!

Life Magazine in 1949

Continuing my look at Life Magazines on Internet Archive….

As I looked at the issues from 1949, the advertisements often stood out (for fossil fuels, Pillsbury, Lionel trains, train travel, World Book Encyclopedia) …and also items that were the beginnings that of things that have developed since then: farmers using lady bugs to control insects on crops, the launch of Viking II, Prince Charles (now King) as a baby, shale oil, a pipeline in Saudi Arabia, big oil in west Texas). Some articles referenced back to World War II: art depicting the Germans trying to burn out London and war babies starting first grade. Evident the cold in the first months of 1949 were very damaging in the Midwest and there was heavy snow in the Cascades in May!

The Life pictures are windows into what the publishers (and a lot of other people) thought was newsworthy in 1949.

Jessie Wilcox Smith – A Child’s World

I was browsing through the December 1909 issue of McClure’s Magazine when I found A Child’s World – A Series of Pictures by Jessie Wilcox Smith. I always enjoy her illustrations and it was a pleasant surprise. There are only 5 illustrations – one shown in this post to entice you to follow the link to the others for the quick ‘book of the week.

Continuing my look at Life Magazines on Internet Archive….

As I looked at the issues from 1948, I noticed more stories about booming business and industry that about the aftermath of World War II. Isreal was in the news…and Truman surprised the prognosticators by winning the election in November. Children were in the news struggling in a polio epidemic or left behind across the world by GI fathers or hungry/homeless in Europe. The Life pictures are windows into what the publishers (and a lot of other people) thought was newsworthy in 1948.

Twenty more books were added to my botanical print eBook collection in June – all are available for browsing on Internet Archive.   16 of the books are a continuation of the Carnivorous Plant Newsletters; there are 4 volumes per year so this month includes 2013 to 2017; I’ll continue browsing this periodical in July. There were a few miscellaneous volumes at the beginning of the list – with a wide range of publication dates (1660 – 2001).

Carl Sandburg’s Rootabaga Stories/Pigeons

Project Gutenberg has the two Rootabaga books published by Carl Sandburg in the 1920s. Both books were illustrated by Maud and Miska Petersham. I remember hearing about these books when I visited Carl Sandburg’s last home in North Carolina with my daughter in 2003…but didn’t encounter them again until this year. Enjoy the text and the illustrations!

English Moths and Butterflies (1766)

This week’s featured eBook is by Moses Harris and depicts English moths and butterflies – along with the plants on which they feed, their lifecycle changes, where to find their adult forms, and the common names in the mid-1700s. The author was an entomologist and engraver…and secretary to the Aurelian Society. The book was printed by the author!
