Plastics Crisis – The Personal Economics of Less Plastics

I’ve been making changes over the past months to reduce plastic around my house enough that I am now thinking about the benefits we are observing.

Our transition to bar soaps for showers and hand-washing costs less than the myriad of plastic bottled products…and both my husband and I have noticed skin improvements (less itching, less dry skin).

My electric tea kettle (only glass or stainless surfaces touching the water) is better than I imaged it would be – much better for making tea than the old coffee maker (that had a lot of plastic parts). I discovered that our water has enough minerals that the tea kettle developed scale quickly; putting a little lemon juice in the water (i.e. acid) solved the problem. I am using tea bags that are supposedly free of plastic glue but am considering cutting them open and using the tea leaves only. The tea makes it easier for me to cut back on soft drinks too! From a cost standpoint it is about the same as buying a new coffee maker.

I replaced all my plastic leftover and storage containers for food with glass (even though they have plastic lids….I don’t overfill the containers so that food never touches the plastic). The food is preserved as well as before and I find myself also using the containers for some items I previously put in Ziplocs (i.e. plastic) – like cranberries I am freezing and carrots I am taking with me for snacks on road trips. When I can’t buy a veggie except in a plastic bag (like carrots), I am starting to put them in a glass container when I get home from the store with the idea that the longer the carrots are in the plastic bag, the more microplastics they have on/in them. I also like that the glass dries better in my dishwasher!

The Rorra water filter is working well for us. We use it for drinking and cooking and the water fountain for the cats. There is no reason for us to buy bottled water any more. Of course – the Rorra and replacement filters cost something, but we are comfortable with our water at this point.

We replaced the type of humidifier we had with ones that use evaporation rather than creating a mist. This winter our house has about the same humidity level but without the white dust (and microplastics) the mist humidifiers created. Our air purifiers rarely go into ‘high’ mode now whereas last year they did any time we had them on near a humidifier.

Even though I have cut back on soft drinks, I still drink them occasionally….but they are in cans rather than plastic bottles. We have very few plastic bottles in our recycle. We have stopped putting some plastics in recycle even though our curbside service accepts them since we are aware that the materials rarely get recycled; even the milk and soft drink bottles/jugs (which are the most frequently recycled plastics) often end up in landfills…so it is good that we simply buy less in those containers these days.

I have stopped buying salad dressing since it is almost always in a plastic bottle. I am making my own. My favorite right now is a lemon ginger vinaigrette! It costs less and I make only what I need at the time.

I am going to start buying olive oil in glass rather than plastic as soon as I use up what I have. It will be more expensive, but I use it slowly, so I don’t need to buy a large container. I might have to buy it somewhere other than my usual grocery store just as I do my lemon juice(in a glass bottle).

I am buying fruits and veggies that are not packaged when I can - which means that I don’t buy arugula like before. I skew toward cabbage and squash and peppers and cucumbers and broccoli. In the summer I’ll eat violet leaves from my yard! The apples and pears and lemons I buy are not packaged; I do buy organic oranges in a mesh bag because that is the only way they come (and I give my daughter half of them). I take them out of the packaging as soon as I get them home.

In summary – I’ve made some investments (Rorra, glass containers, tea kettle, humidifier, a ladle to replace a plastic one) that are working well for us. They were not too expensive, and they will last a long time. On a week-to-week basis – costs have probably gone down buy a little – no plastic water bottles of water, body wash, or hand soap…and less soft drinks overall.

Farmers Market

The joys of summer produce….

I was overwhelmed by the bustle of the Springfield MO farmers market – decided to explore the smaller ones in the surrounding communities. The first one I tried was too small…the second was just right! They are open on Thursday afternoon, and I go before the after-work crowd. So far – I’ve enjoyed the heirloom tomatoes (big ones and small ones),

And basil (one time they had arugula…one of my favorites).

There are more than produce vendors. I bought goat milk soap (with lavender) last week….tried a fried pie the week before.

There is not enough produce variety to support a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture); maybe there are some veggies that just don’t sell well enough for the farmers to grow for the market. Things like collards, kale, Asian veggies, tomatillos, fennel etc. I wish there were. I might look around next spring for a local CSA. I like to discover new favorites while I also enjoy the regulars. Freshly picked heirloom tomatoes are always better than the ones in the grocery store!

10 Objects that Defined 2020

BBC Future had a blog post last week that listed 37 objects the defined the year. It prompted me to create my own list…what objects will I remember most from 2020. I didn’t limit myself to objects that would be good for a time capsule…some of mine are perishable…but everything on the list is a physical object that will remind me of this pandemic year from now on.

The face mask – I’d never worn a face mask before this year…and it took some getting used to. The masks were hardest to wear when it was hot…but now that the weather is colder they are not as bothersome. It could also be that I am more adept at wearing them now. There are some that are ‘in the mail’ from my daughter – ordered a few weeks before Christmas to see me through to a time we don’t have to wear masks (hopefully in 2021 when a large number of people have been vaccinated and new cases plummet).

Hand sanitizer – We never leave the house without a bottle of hand sanitizer. At first, we thought we’d be using huge amounts of it but the places we go often have dispensers…and we aren’t out and about away from home that frequently.

Bar soap – At home – we use soap and water on our hands rather than hand sanitizer. We switched from liquid soap dispensers to bar soap in our house with it was hard to get the dispensers early in the pandemic. My husband has gone back to the soap dispensers, but I like the artisan bar soaps and will continue to enjoy them even after the pandemic. Added benefits: the ones I am using don’t seem to be as hard on my skin….and I buy bar soap in paper or cardboard packaging so no plastic!

Pecan topped custard (pumpkin, sweet potato, butternut squash) – I discovered pecans put on the top of custard stay on the top (like pecan pie)…and will always associate that dish with the pandemic for years to come.

Haystacks – I made haystack cookies (Chow mein noodles coated with melted chocolate/butterscotch) for the first time; it all started when I realized I was missing the holiday cookies from events usually held in December – but cancelled for this year. Making this treat helped improve my mood for the different sort of holiday we had this year. I’ll probably add it to my repertoire of sweets for the holidays going forward.

Bird feeder cam – We got the bird feeder camera in early 2020, before we understood that a pandemic would dominate the year. It was something we enjoyed all year long…a continuing project to learn more about the birds that visit out back yard feeder.

Cut flowers (from the CSA and then from Wegmans) – In previous years I would cut flowers occasionally at the CSA…for Thanksgiving and Christmas, I’d buy flowers. This year I got flowers every week during the CSA season and now I buy flowers every time I go to the grocery store. It’s something easy to do that brightens my mood every time I see them….and my husband likes them too.

Magnifying glasses with lights – There have been so many photographic mini-projects during the pandemic…things we could do without leaving our neighborhood. Most of the time we already had the equipment we needed…but the magnifying glasses with built-in lights were new…and I found myself using them for a lot of different things…some of them not involving photography.

Layered Zentangle tiles – I moved from making Zentangle patterns (sometimes with shading) to using that as just a starting point…adding coloring and highlighting – sometimes in stages rather than completing the tile all at once. I had more time to spend making tiles…and I enjoyed taking the tiles in a different direction than previous years.

Home – It’s a physical and emotional place…but an assemblage of objects as well. Over this year, my perception of it has deepened because I have been surrounded by it for more hours. There are some objects that I’ve found easier to put in the donation pile…others that I have used more frequently….a few that are rediscovered objects to treasure. My appreciation of my house and home has increased dramatically.

Soup for a winter day. Pureed sweet potato, a few pieces of beet (both have great color), garlic, onion powder, Italian seasonings, left over brisket, beef broth with pumpkin seeds and Chinese noodles on top. Yummy and pretty too.
