Red Leaves

The fall in our area is not as colorful this year because of drought…but there are still some red leaves in my yard

The Virginia creeper adorns my front steps and the fence by my gate. The red leaves don’t last long but are a welcome splash of color.

I have two types of sumac: smooth and fragrant. The smooth sumac was planted last spring (a seedling picked up ‘free’ from an Earth Dad festival). The aromatic sumac has been around for a few years and is in the same area where I am battling Asian honeysuckle. Sumacs are known for their red color in the fall.

Even oak seedlings can show red color! This is one in a bed toward the center of my back yard; the seedling came up in a good spot to let it grow into a tree; its parent is my neighbor’s oak.

I’m glad that I have these native plants in my yard – enjoying the ‘red’ while it lasts.
