Ten Little Celebrations – January 2024

There are so many little celebrations every day. Here are my top 10 for January 2024.

51 years of being married. OK – perhaps this one is not ‘little.’ We marked the day by getting a special meal (picked up, eaten at home)…but the more significant part of the celebration was the savoring of being long marrieds…of always being supportive of each other, particularly when things are stressful.

Spider lily bulbs. I celebrated getting spider lily bulbs (and some iris rhizomes) planted before the very cold weather in mid-January.

A fragrant candle. I finally used up a very fragrant candle I had moved from Maryland (in the car since they are not permitted on moving trucks). When I entered my office each morning, I celebrated how it smelled from the candle I’d burned a few hours the previous evening!

Being home. Being away from home for 7 weeks and then leaving again for Texas 2.5 weeks later for a few days gave me several opportunities to celebrate coming and being home!

Braum’s Strawberry Poppyseed Chicken Salad. Yum. I had about given up on finding something at a fast food place that I liked…so I celebrated this discovery. The greens are fresh, the grilled chicken tender, the strawberries, blueberries, and pineapple make it special.

First Snow. I celebrated being home for snow…not on the road between Texas and home!

Patterns in the snow. I celebrated my first pattern walks in the snow…hope to try it again soon.

Old friends. I celebrated that two old friends (that I hadn’t talked to in years) contacted me just when I needed to talk to them…before I even realized how wonderful that would be.

2 years cancer free. Celebrating a 2-year mark of a 5-year monitoring regime for cancer after surgery…and all the checks are indicating no cancer.

Being indoors. When the temperature is single digits or below zero…it’s worth celebrating an indoor day in a warm house.

Yard Work

The grass was dry enough to mow by about 10…and the temperature was in the mid-70s, an occasional breeze. My husband started out with the mowing while I picked up twigs/small branches that had blown out of our oak and sycamore…to take back to the brush pile. I took the small amount of kitchen scraps we’d accumulated to go back to the compost pile; it included some spent flowers I’d purchased…and some that I’d brought in from our own garden.

I decided to cut down some of the milkweed in our front flower bed. It is not beautiful…and I since I’ve discovered the meadow of milkweed near the neighborhood stormwater pond, I don’t need to have a huge amount. Last year I didn’t have a single Monarch caterpillar. After I’d cut some of the big stalks down, I discovered that there were a lot of day lily buds behind them. I hope that cutting the milkweed doesn’t make the buds more vulnerable to deer. I’ll cut the day lilies as soon as the bugs are large enough to open.

There are lots of other buds over by the bird bath and they are very exposed. The deer are not intimidated about coming up that close to our front porch! They’ve been like that for the past 4-5 days…so hopefully the deer won’t find them for another week or so. At least one stalk may be mature enough to get cut in a day or so.

Under the deck there are two kinds of ferns that are doing well this year. I was surprised that there is a small holly there too. Holly is an understory tree but I’m not sure it will do well in the deep shade under our deck. I’m leaving it alone for now.

I had plenty of time to look things over because my husband didn’t turn the mower over to me until he got thirsty. I got 3 or 4 rounds in the backyard before he was back. I’m glad he is feeling better but miss the workout of mowing more of the yard.

Unique activities for yesterday:

The 2nd CSA share. So many good things for a summer salad. I used a small amount a few hours after I got home: red leaf lettuce, summer squash, turnip, radish, arugula – a little chicken for protein. The crispers are still very full. I’m in the mode of having a huge salad every day while we have the huge amount of greens!

Since we have 2 pounds of summer squash – I’m letting my husband choose between custard and muffins. That will be a morning project since I don’t want to use the oven on a hot afternoon. Our air conditioning is good…but why make it work harder. I like cooking first thing in the morning anyway.

Cranberries

I am enjoying cranberries almost every day this month!

In breakfast smoothies (together with vanilla flax milk, walnuts, and a banana), salads (chopped with nuts, raw sweet potato, celery plus flakes of canned chicken, a dressing of mayo and ginger preserves), stir fry (any time I want a tart fruit flavor with the veggies), baked with an apple, a few pecans and a dab of butter.

Cranberries are easy to freeze so I’ve been stocking up and freezing them…using up almost all the small plastic containers I have. I’ll be enjoying cranberries long after the season is over.

When I want a pretty smoothie – I add some fresh or canned beets to the smoothie along with the cranberries. Very pink/red…a great seasonal start to the day.

Favorite Foods – October 2019

My favorite foods were all about using the fall CSA bounty.

I made chicken salad with fennel (the feathery part and the stalk), raw sweet potato, spring onion, and bell pepper chopped up in the Ninja food processor with a little mayo…French fried onions on top. Tasty and nutritious. A meal in a bowl.

Popcorn is a favorite of mine but this October I worked for it a bit more. I got 4 ears of popcorn from the CSA and learned to rub the kernels off the cobs into a big bowl (so I didn’t have too many escapees). The popcorn had a few silks with it but by the time the corn was popped I didn’t notice them. I use a popcorn bowl (from Amazon) in the microwave then add garlic salt and butter just before I eat it!

I also made butternut squash custard (using the same recipe as for pumpkin custard) since I had 3 large butternut squash from the CSA. I still have cooked squash in my freezer to use for another custard or two.
